Mumford and sons - Sigh no more

Released : October 2009

Rating: 76 out of 100.

'Mumford & Sons' is a folk and indie rock band from London. Since they formed in late 2007, they released a lot of EP's , before releasing their debut album called 'Sigh no more' in October 2009. The band's front-man is Marcus Mumford, a multi-instrumentalist, and the vocalist of the band. He is surrounded by three other guys, insuring a lot of other musical instruments like Dobro, guitar, double bass, mandolin, banjo, keyboard... That's why their sound is very rich in this album, they get us out of the folk music habit with an old guy sitting down and playing guitar the whole time.

The album starts off with the song 'Sigh no more', following a formula that is very common in a lot of other songs, Mumford begins with his guitar, then Ted Dwayne on double bass, then some banjo or something similar comes in, giving a touch of southern folk to the atmosphere of the album. Finally the kick drum comes giving the rhythm, it's also played by Mumford.

Then is the song 'The cave', here again the same formula is followed, just like in 'Roll away your stone', 'Awake your soul'.. and some other songs. But even with that the songs don't really sound similar, there is always some variations in the tempo, rhythm, or the patterns of the song. Sometimes it starts really slow then suddenly the guitars go very fast making some nice country styles, and giving the songs some kind of authenticity comparing to the classic folk music.

altNext few ballads bring in a minor and sad tone to the album, first with 'White blank page', mixing some nice guitar arpeggios and some more emotional lyrics and voice from the singer 'Mumford'. It ends with a beautiful string background. Then comes the song 'I gave you all', and here the title speaks by it self, a sad little romantic song throwing lyrics like 'your tears feel warm as they fall on my forearm'.

Next one is 'Little lion man', this one is really a great one, you shouldn't miss it. It's by far my favorite one of all the album, and actually it's the first single of the album, it was even voted number one on the Australian poll Triple J hottest 100, 2009 countdown. It's a very energetic song, nice guitar intro and chords, and beautiful lyrics. It shows that Mumford and sons have some good musical potential, and that they can produce some very beautiful stuff.

Nothing very exciting with the rest of the album, some nice songs here and there, 'Timshel', 'After the storm'. All of them sound good, but they are very common, no new stuff, no super memorable song.

In general, this album is not bad, it's very likable, simple enough to be enjoyable, nice guitar rhythms, nice Banjo and Dobro melodies, great voice of the singer, may be someday this band will help revive the good old folk music again, but until then they need to work more on their next albums, and make more original music that really stands out of the crowd to make it happen.
